Panevezys Center of Mechatronics contracted ProBaltic Consulting as contractor and VDI/VDE Innovation + Technik GmbH from Germany as a subcontractor to assess the „Mems Fab“ (CleanRoom), the existing facilities, and various scenarios for their further development reflecting market needs.

The assignment included preparation of one feasibility study for MEMS fab in Panevėžys (clean room study), and four feasibility studies of special MEMS products, which could be manufactured or developed using the cleanroom services of such MEMS fab (4 product studies).

A 10-day visit of the German experts in Lithuania, analysis of Lithuania’s innovation system related to microsystems, the discussions with various stakeholders in the country, and corresponding pre- and post-visit desk research efforts resulted in suggested approach for the further development of a MEMS facility at Panevėžys follows a “technology push” concept. A technology platform as a resilient, flexible, modular and upgradeable base for further activities was suggested, while listing necessary equipment and providing operation models and business scenarios, including cost considerations.

Four feasible product scenarios were presented, which could be further elaborated in the context of the proposed two-year ramp-up phase of a re-launched the clean room facility at Panevėžys as a Centre of Competence in microsystems technology. Suggestions were additionally supported through analysis of market trends and opportunities, technical challenges and requirements, and target prizes. S VDI/VDE Innovation + Technik GmbH also benchmarked Panevezys Center of Mechatronics against similar Centres of Excellence in Europe, while applying a proven methodology.
